Subject: [*] attoClock 1.0
attoClock 1.0
The way-tiny, miniscule, little clock program.
What it is
attoClock is a very small application (4,931 bytes) for System 7 that displays
a digital clock in a small window. It has intentionally few features. It
displays the hour and minute, respecting the time format you have set in your
control panels. It doesnt display seconds or the date or ring chimes or
display movies or pictures or animations. Just the time.
The motivation for creating attoClock was that I like having a clock on my
screen, but I dont want to give up a lot of memory or disk space for the
function. Also, I distrust the extensions and control panels that put a clock
in the menu bar. Even with the best efforts of the authors, conflicts among
complex extensions occur. A small application that obeys Apples programming
guidelines is the least obtrusive way to provide a simple function like this.
REQUIRES SYSTEM 7 or higher.

Subject: [*] HemiRoids 1.0.7
HeimRoids is an educational effort on my part, and part of a quest to build
a good game construction set for the Mac. It's a work-alike of that old
standby we all know and love, and is free; see "Legal Stuff", at the end of
this document.
REQUIREMENTS: System 6.0.7 or later, 8-bit color, enough memory to give it
an 1100K partition, and 32-bit QuickDraw. 32-bit QuickDraw is in the ROMs
on machines built after the IIci, and included in System 7 on all machines;
if you have a IIcx, IIx or II with System 6 it's an extension you need to
add. I've run HemiRoids with VM on, and as long as enough "real" RAM is
around to page HemiRoids in completely it should work but no guarantees
there.
This has been tested on a variety of Quadras, an LCII, IIci, IIcx, IIfx and
IIsi, on-board video and Apple 8- and 24-bit video boards, in 32-bit
addressing and 24-bit addressing, Virtual Memory on and off. I haven't had
the opportunity to test it with a vast variety of exotic video boards, so
if you have problems with something unusual please let me know. If you have
a video accelerator, you may have to turn it off to run HemiRoids (or a lot
of other games), but I'm not sure about this.
I'd like to thank all the folks who sent me bug reports so far. If you find
anything else, please let me know! Any comments are appreciated.
Enjoy,
Sean Ansorge

Subject: [*] Investment Tracker 1.1
"Investment Tracker" is a HyperCard 2.1 Stack that can be used to track
investments in stocks, mutual funds, or anything else that issues shares
for which a price quote is available. The information for each
investment is stored on a single card of the stack which contains the
buttons for entering and manipulating data and calculating various
interesting things about the investment. It is particularly valuable
for tracking investments in which you are making periodic investments
(Dollar Cost Averaging, Dividend Reinvestment Plans) or withdraws.
-- What's new in Version 1.1 --
- Improved interface.
- Automatic recalculation when files are edited.
- Faster algorithm for calculating annual average yield.
- Works with the "new, improved" HyperCard Player.
-- Features --
- Records date and dollar amount of transaction and price per share for
purchases, dividends or sales (partial or total). These records can
be displayed and edited at any time.
- Calculates total shares held in each stock or mutual fund.
- Calculates total dollar amount invested in each stock or mutual fund.
- Calculates total worth of each stock or mutual fund.
- Calculates tax basis of each stock or mutual fund taking into account
dividends reinvested and partial sales.
- Calculates average price paid for each stock or mutual fund.
- Calculates (by iteration) the average annual yield for each stock or
mutual fund.
--System Requirements--
HyperCard 2.1. This stack was written under System 7 on my Classic II.
It will now work on any machine that is running HyperCard 2.1 or the
"new, improved" HyperCard Player.
--Shareware--
A US$5 registration fee is requested. Registered users
will receive my Import/Export Utility Stack for Investment Tracker.
This Utility Stack enables transferring investment files from earlier
versions of Investment Tracker to the lastest version and exporting
Investment Tracker files to most spreadsheets and databases.
Compacted and BinHexed using Compact Pro 1.33.

NOTE: This is a resubmission of MiniScreen. The previous 1.7 version
uploaded just last week (sigh) had a bogus expiration date that caused it
die an early death. Please accept our apology as we remedy this situation
with this new 1.7.1 version.
MiniScreen temporarily changes your monitor's desktop to any size you
desire, such as the dinky, nine-inch "Classic" monitor. It is most
excellent for:
o Software development and localization
o QuickTime video development
o Multimedia presentations
o Game playing
o Office pranks
o ...and more.
See the enclosed "About MiniScreen" file for complete documentation.
This demo version of MiniScreen 1.7.1 is fully functional for a reasonable
period of time (we promise!), after which it will expire. MiniScreen 1.7.1
is $39.95 (or $10 upgrade) directly from the Morgan Davis Group. The demo,
however, is completely free, so enjoy it. Compatible with System 6 and 7.
New in MiniScreen 1.7.1:
o Uses System 7 icon tools (if running under System 7)
o More built-in screen settings
o Uses standard 'pref' type file for Preferences
(if updating, trash your old MiniScreen Prefs file).

Subject: [*] New, BIG Bolo map - with .hqx
(This is the second try at this - an earlier post had a corrupt map file)
After downloading the Bolo maps available from Info-Mac, I discovered (to my
disappointment!) that they are all, or nearly all, small: the original 52x104
size.
Well, said I, now that there are editors that support the new large format,
let's get some big maps out there!
Here's my contribution, to start out: a full-size (216x216) map entitled
"Drawn and Quartered." You'll see why when you play it.
Note: this map has not been heavily play-tested with various numbers of
players. The design was motivated by a desire to investigate logistics issues
in Bolo; consequently, there is somewhat of a scarcity of trees. This is
deliberate. I welcome suggestions for improvements to this scenario; however,
*do not* distribute modifications without changing the 'AUTH' resource
embedded
in the map file. This is the resource used by the BoloStar map editor to
record the author of the scenario.
To avoid having the various archive sites swamped by lots of various people
submitting many different new, large maps; I hereby volunteer to collect any
new maps that people find interesting. Send maps in BinHex format, along with
any explanitory text that you may wish to include, to the following email
address:
fixer@faxcsl.dcrt.nih.gov
Note: before you decide to offer a map to the world at large, consider
whether
it's an interesting scenario, or whether it's "gimmicky." I hope that the
playability of maps offered for public consumption will be kept high. My own
first offering, "Drawn and Quartered," is mostly to get the ball rolling: I
suspect that people who use it extensively will have many good suggestions for
improvement.

Subject: [*] Re: Bill_Trash_1.0.cpt.hqx
Hi, Gordon!
Just got your mail about BillTrash...Hope I'm not TOO late!
BillTrash is just a ResEdit file containing two icon families to
replace the standard Trash Can icon in the finder. This replaces the
Trash Can picture with the likeness of Bill the Cat from Bloom County.
Just open your System file with ResEdit and open up the ICN# resource
and find the trash can icons. Open up the ICN# resource in BillTrash, too.
Copy each picture from each icon family and paste into the corresponding
icon family member. Bill's mouth should be closed for the empty trash can,
and his tongue should hang out for the full trash can.
There should be a "readme" file compressed with the resedit file, and
a STR# resource in the ResEdit document, both explaining what BillTrash is
and how to use him.
Thanx a lot!
Eric
PS If I *am* too late, let me know, and I'll send BillTrash to you again

Subject: 32-bit Enabler
Dear Netters,
I have been reading in the digest about people reinstalling systems
just to get the enabler to work. Too much work! Here's what you do.
Turn off Mode 32, then remove
it totally from the system folder. Reboot. (This should switch it to 24-bit,
for that
is what you are trying to achieve, but also to totally remove MODE 32). Next,
place the
enabler in the system folder, reboot, and then switch to 32-bit mode. You
will have
to reboot one more time, so make sure you use extension manager or the like to
remove
your INITS and Control Panels, etc... because you will reboot three times.
This worked
on a Mac IIx with about 35-40 inits, extensions, and control panels on
bootup. Hope
this helps someone.

an Interfax 24/96 for quite a while now. I've never had to call tech
support, but the thought that they might no longer be there wasn't
a pleasant one.
My first reflex was to call the Everex support BBS. Its number is
in the readme file that came with the Interfax -- for reference, you
can reach the BBS at (510) 226-9694 (Although you have to pay LD
charges).
The BBS answered normally and everything seemed in order. I did
notice that there is a *BETA* version of Interfax 1.3.1 posted -- it
is billed as "providing Quadra compatibility and fixes several common
problems". Please note that this *is* a beta version, but development
on the new version seems to be continuing, and the problem you des-
cribe might already be solved by this release.
If you have a fast modem, I would advise calling the board at an
off-peak hour (After 11:00) and downloading the new version to see if
it solves your problem.
I checked one other number: the international tech support line
(I live in Canada) at (510) 438-4654 gave every sign of still being
functional, although I only got an answering machine, seeing as I called
off-hours. My manual lists (510) 498-4433 as the number for within the
US and (510) 683-3398 for fax messages. Customer service is listed
as (510) 498-4499 and the customer service fax is listed as (510)
683-2662.
If you've been trying 800 numbers, they might have changed them...
I would say the LD lines are a safer bet, although you *do* have to pay.
Please keep me informed of any futher discoveries you may make!
Cheers,
Mark Aiken

Subject: Apollo and Eudora
I have had a few reports of crashes occurring in Eudora when my
launching and switching extension, Apollo, is activated. I am
reasonably sure that I have found the problem: since it is easily
avoided, I am posting this message as a stop-gap until I release
the next version of Apollo.
The problem occurs not just with Eudora, but with any program that
uses window names longer than 32 characters, when Apollo's
window-switching submenus are active and Apollo is set to sort
windows alphabetically rather than front-to-back. Eudora seems
to be the commonest application that creates windows with long
names, but no doubt there are others. The bug, I must stress in
fairness to Steve Dorner, is entirely due to Apollo: Eudora is
completely blameless.
The best solution to the problem is to make Apollo sort its
window menus front-to-back rather than alphabetically. Use the
fourth page of Apollo's preferences dialog (Window menus) to
do this.
My apologies for any inconvenience caused.

This in not correct. We have had cap (Columbia AppleTalk Protocol) running on
our Sun workstation cluster for about 6-7 months or so now and it has been
using
ethertalk phase 2 the whole time.
Alan may have tried an earlier incarnation of CAP that did not support
phase-2.
We initially installed CAP v6.0 patch level 100 which does. The current
version
is at patch level 128 (although 100 was remarkable stable - not a single
crash
or glitch the whole time up to our recent upgrade to the current patch
level).
Cap works great. And you can't beat the price. I'd recommend taking another
look at it.

The internal CD-300i doesn't have RCA jacks (they're called RCA jacks in
this country). You have to use the sound output port to drive an amplifier
or headphone. However, the sound quality would be severely compromised
because the output would be mixed with the signal generated by the Mac
itself.
For this reason alone, I would buy an external CD-ROM player and use
the internal space for a different 5-1/4" device.

I downloaded it and it worked fine. I have a Mac IIci w/ undoubtably
too many INITs/cdevs running System 7.1. On the other hand, I *may* have
run NDD on the disk before using it. I usually do so when I download
stuff so that annoying minor problems such as a missing BNDL bit or
invalid date get resolved before I use the new stuff. I don't recall
anything being terribly wrong with Disk Bug Checker, but I could be
wrong.
I guess I'd suggest that you either look for an INIT/cdev incompatibility
or run a disk/file fixing utility before giving up on it.

I combine scanned photos to create realistic fakes using Expert Color
Paint. It has very few controls but plenty enough for digital retouching.
(changing gamma & RGB balance) no, (brightness & contrast) yes. Yes ECP
works quite well. It handles TIFF and PICT. It runs in 2Megs of RAM and
creates a virtual space on your hard disk to manage the image. You need
enough free disk space for a copy of the image to reside on the drive while
you work on it (in addition to the original image file that is your saved
version). (support 16-bit color correctly) no idea. For the money I love
it.
I have been scanning in 8 by 10 inch photos and "working" with the scanned
images. I just got my images back on Kodak Photo CD and will see if by
using the Kodak software I can manipulate the images in ECP.

Subject: HELP!! Crashed Hard Drive!! (A)
You sound like you're experiencing the recently discovered bug in the
Mac ROM chips. When certain conditions exist (disk size, fragmentation
of extents file, # of partitions, etc.), the Mac will perform incorrect
math and think the disk is not a Mac disk.
Solution: Get Disk Bug Checker 1.1 from the archives. It will tell you
what conditions cause the problem. Either way, do this:
1. The Disk is FINE!!!!!. Don't initialize. No data will be lost.
2. Run Norton or MacTools. let the utility mount the disk near the end
of the diagnostic.
3. Optimize the disk to eliminate the fragmentation. This brings the
fragmentation of the extents file down to zero.
4. Now reboot. Since their is no fragmentation, it should work.
OTHER NOTES:
1. Don't use Apple's 32-bit enabler. It double boots on startup, which
forces the problem to appear more often. Must use Mode 32 for now.
2. Changing partition sizes may make the problem go away (you change
the mathmatical calculations that produce the bug.
I've been having this problem for 10 months with my IIcx. Glad somebody
finally traced it to the ROM chips.

I have a 128 Mb M/O drive from PLI which I've been using since this
past summer (brief pause to remember summer...).
(1) would be true, except that PLI supplies their own init--
"RemvInit 3.5"--to mount automatically any newly-inserted disk.
(2) is true; even if I am not sharing any particular folders on the
M/O disk, even if the disk itself is not set to be shared, even if
I turn program linking off, I cannot unmount the disk if I have file
sharing turned on. (I *think* that's because *all* mounted volumes
are being shared for the "Owner"--that's me--regardless of other
settings.) But I rarely have file-sharing turned on.
So, in practice, I have the same functionality as your "PC type down
the hall ... [who] treats them like floppy drives," except that I
*can* turn on file sharing when I want to ;-)

I have a PLI 128Mb M/O drive and I can say that the answer is "Depends".
PLI does provide an extension (RemvINIT) which allows you to insert and
remove the optical disks at any time, works just like a floppy. Now I will
qualify that statement when it comes to file sharing. If you have an
optical disk already mounted on the desktop, and then you startup file
sharing (assume System 7 for this discussion), you will not be able to
dismount and eject the m/o disk regardless of whether you have a shared
folder on it or not. But if you startup file sharing before inserting and
mounting an m/o disk, then insert and mount the m/o, the m/o disk will be
ejectable. It all depends on the order you do things.

Subject: M/O Drive Question (A)
In the following responses I relate my understanding of the way removable
media and personal file sharing work based on my experience with the
Microtech 650 magneto optical drives (OR650 and Genesis 650).
In Info-Mac V11 #50 Al Bloom wrote:
>I just read the article in the new MacUser on M/O drives, and a couple

If a disk is in the drive when the system is started, the driver is read
>From the disk. Microtech provides a system extension that installs the
driver even if there is no disk in the drive on startup, so that a disk can
be inserted in the drive anytime. Perhaps not all removable media drive
manufacturers provide software to do that.
>and (2) a disk cannot be "put away" if file sharing is active.
The good news is that removable media can be shared. There are two relevant
rules with personal file sharing. One, all disks that are mounted when file
sharing is turned on are "shared" (implicitly, you can mount your "hard"
disks from another AppleShare client). Two, a "shared" disk may not be put
away. So, if you *want* to share a removable disk, insert it before
starting file sharing. Then you will have to stop file sharing before
ejecting that disk. If you do *not* want to share a removable disk (e.g.,
if you want to eject it without stopping file sharing), leave the drive
empty when starting file sharing. Then, you can mount and put away any
number of removable disks, but cannot share them.
>Gee, that seems goofy. If it is true.
What makes all of this seem "goofy" is the *implicit* sharing of all
mounted volumes. (Note that it doesn't help to turn off "Allow user to see
entire disk" for the "Owner"; probably because this can be turned on and
off without stopping file sharing.) If the sharing of each volume could be
turned on and off in the manner of the sharing of a folder, then it would
make sense to be able to put away an unshared removable disk. Of course,
just because it makes sense to me doesn't mean that Apple would do it ;-).
>A PC type down the hall has a couple 128MB M/O's, and
>he says he treats them like floppy drives.
As you can see from the previous comments, you can "treat your magneto
optical drives like floppy drives" as long as you don't want to share them.
(I'll resist asking about the PC type's personal file sharing. :-)

Subject: M/O Drive Question (A)
In IM 11-50, Al Bloom asks about 128MB MO drives, and asks
if it's true that they 1) must have disks in them at startup,
if mounting with something like SCSIProbe is to be avoided,
and 2) that filesharing must be turned off to eject a disk.
Well, I've got an Epson MO drive from APS, and unfortunately,
both of these things are true. Luckily, with QuicKeys, both
toggling filesharing and mounting added disks can be automated.
Once I got used to it, I didn't mind the hassle so much, and
the abundance of space (each additional 600 megs costs me
$200!) more than makes up for any inconvenience.
Hope this helps,
Claude

To add my two centimes worth to this discussion, I might add that
WordPerfect is available in a French language version (although they tend to
lag behind by a version or so, translation takes time...).
Any one doing any serious typing in the French language would be well
advised to buy a French AZERTY keyboard. There is a learning curve to be
overcome (AZQWM and ; are the chief differences plus numbers on the top row
require the shift key to be pressed) but in my opinion, this is preferable to
searching the command key combinations for the diacritical characters which
are
very frequently used in French.
By the way, I switched back to QWERTY when in Scotland last year, now
I'm back to using AZERTY again. A bit of a pain switching over, but it can be

A big 'thanks' to all the folks who sent me opinions about SAM vs.
Gatekeeper and Disinfectant. I had been planning to get back to
everyone individually, but the recent listserv snafu caused me to
have to dump all my mail files, and I don't remember everyone who
replied.
The consensus, with a couple of dissenting votes thrown in, was
that there is not much point in using SAM instead of Gatekeeper or
Disinfectant, *unless* you use a lot of compressed files. SAM, I am
told, is able to scan compressed files while the others are not.
Other than that feature, the choice seems to pretty much boil down
to personal preference.

Subject: Using a DeskWriter w/ Windows
I have an HP DeskWriter (Mac version of the DeskJet) hooked up to my Mac.
I also have a PC running Windows. I want to print from Windows to my
DeskWriter. I can't. :-(
I have a couple of those serial switch boxes that I was planning to use
so I could share my modem and my printer with both computers. Everything is
working great with the modem. When it comes to the printer though...
As I understand, the DeskJet 500 and the DeskWriter are the same printer.
The only difference is that the Mac version has a mini-din port used either as
a serial port or as an AppleTalk port (it has circuitry to sense which), and
the PC version has a parallel port. I figured I could use the DeskJet 500
driver that comes with Windows to talk to my printer. I told the driver
to use the COM1 serial port instead of the LPT1 (parallel) port. The
problem is, for some reason, it won't let me set a speed higher than
19.2Kbps. The DeskWriter manual says that the printer communicates at
57.6Kbps
(and for all I know can't be changed. I wouldn't want to though, 'cause then
it wouldn't talk to the Mac).
My comm software on the PC can be set to 57.6K, so I know it isn't a
limitation of the PC's serial ports. I guess my question is, does
Windows itself simply not allow PRINTING to go any faster than 19.2? Or is
it a limitation in the DeskJet driver? Does anyone know of another driver
that would allow me to run the serial port faster?
Any Clues? Anybody? Please?

>The Connectix online users deal was reported recently in this
>forum. In it is mentioned their new product "InfoLog."

>can't find this product. What is it?
I've been using InfoLog for almost two years now. InfoLog is a specialized
database for locating documents. Infolog is an OnLocation kinda software
for physical files.
It prints out a batch of Avery Labels with unique ID numbers. You put a
label on a document, enter some keywords about that document into InfoLog,
put that document into some folder or box, and tell InfoLog which folder or
box it is located in. When you use InfoLog to search for all documents with
specific keywords, it displays those documents. As you pull each document,
you enter an additional keyword in InfoLog to distinguish it from the
others. Next time, locating THE document you desire is even quicker.
I read a stack of trade magazines every week. When I see something worth
saving I rip it out and file it. Used to have tons of file folders with my
attempt at some sort of categorization of the documents. If I knew I had a
document on a specific subject, I'd end up looking through a bunch of my
folders since it could have been filed into any number of them. Since
documents were difficult to find, I didn't search for them unless I really
needed them.
With InfoLog I read and rip articles and then enter them into InfoLog. Now
I search using InfoLog and not only do I quickly see where the article is
located, I also find other articles I was not aware that I had, and where
they are located. My paper files are many times more useful to me now.
Right now InfoLog is a single user system. The idea is that a work group
would use InfoLog to keep track of their paper files. In a multi-user
version of InfoLog, you and my other partners might allow me to look
through your InfoLog databases for specific information. Maybe you have
documents from some personal connections that I am unaware of (so I
wouldn't even know to ask you for information on the subject). Through
InfoLog I would see that you have documents that fit my key words. I could
ask you about these things and if you felt it was appropriate, you'd supply
me with the information. A multi-user InfoLog would provide a collective
memory of what documents were available. But, for now it is single user and
it greatly increases the usefulness of my personal files.
If you have specific questions, just ask,
Kee
Nethery@parc.xerox.com
Just my opinions. I was an InfoLog beta tester. I get no financials from
Connectix for using InfoLog or talking about it. I love it and am very glad
to have it as a tool.

If your monitor is a Sony Trinitron tube, then the problem is inherent.
The grey line is actually a wire inside, and can be seen on all Trinitrons.
Apple has used Trinitrons in the 13" RGB display as well.
Nothing can be done except turning up the brightness. The same wire can
be seen on Trinitron TV's as well, but one does not notice it as much
compared to a Mac's desktop from 12" away!
Apple's new Color Classic has a 10" Trinitron as well - wonder if the
line is still there?
Live with it, its the Trinitron trademark! (Pity the poor souls without one!)
Yours, William
